How to Remain a Positive Thinker When Times Are Tough

During rough and uncertain times, it’s hard to maintain a positive outlook.

Do you find it hard to see the glass half full? Are you dealing with relationship troubles? Have issues at work gotten you down?

Once you’ve been knocked down, the most important step is getting back up. The good news is that there are ways to become a positive thinker, even during turbulent times.

Don’t let negativity put your life on hold!

Keep reading for 5 ways to embrace positive thoughts.

1. Read Uplifting Stories

We all know that most people have been through a rough patch in their lives.

All around you, you’ll find plenty of inspiring and uplifting stories. Look on social media to find stories that prove the power of optimism.

Knowing that others have made it after hitting rock bottom is inspiring. It gives you a sense of hope that you too can turn your life around.

2. Don’t Dwell

Sitting around and dwelling leaves too much time for overthinking. There is nothing worse than dwelling in negative thoughts.

Instead of letting negativity take over, keep yourself occupied. During stressful times, get moving! Getting your heart pumping and blood moving can reduce stress.

Did you know that exercise also improves cognitive function and reduces depression?

Keep the negative thoughts at bay by:

  • Practicing yoga
  • Going for a run outdoors
  • Go for a nature walk

3. Remember It’s Temporary

When bad things happen, at that very moment, it’s hard to see just how inconsequential the event may be.

Before allowing the negativity to seep in, remember that it’s temporary. Realize that this event doesn’t define your future.

Practice leaving the past behind.

4. Turn Negativity Into Positivity

A positive thinker can turn the worst situations into something good. Instead of dwelling on the negative, find something positive about the situation.

Whenever you hit a rough time, find ways to reframe. Being positive is a choice. The sooner you embrace positivity, the less room there is for pessimism.

To minimize negative thoughts:

  • Practice positive self talk
  • Counteract negative thoughts
  • Brainstorm fixes for the situation
  • Focus on positive visualization

5. Be Thankful

Though life may not be going according to plan, there are still good things in your life. To weed out the negative thoughts, take time to remember what you’re grateful for.

Keep a journal and each day, write down 3 things that you’re thankful for. Be specific about why they make you happy.

Helping others and showing you appreciate them can also help you become a more positive thinker.

Give kudos to a coworker. Send a random thank you message to someone who made your day a little easier.

Showing gratitude is a great way to stay on a positive path.
